Essential Question: Despite overt racism, how did Negro's improve life in the 1920's for themselves?
During the 1920's the Negro experienced a sense of pride in their race and heritage. Once they saw the great artists, writers, and people in Harlem, they realized what a blessing it was to be black. Some of the great achievements they had were blending the culture of whites and blacks and really creating a better relationship between the two races in Harlem. They were able to work and be with their families while spending time having fun at the local dance club where jazz and dances would occur.

What developments during World War I helped give rise to the Harlem Renaissance?
World War I demanded a lot of citizens to join the army to fight in the War. A lot of these citizens were factory workers in the north and when they left for the war, the southern blacks migrated north to fill those positions. This was later known as The Great Migration and was possible because the train was able to take these black families into the cities. Besides jobs, the blacks moved because in the south they were tired of the caste system where they were at the bottom, having a hard time making it by.

How was racial consciousness and racial pride affected by the Harlem Renaissance?
One of the greatest achievements of the Harlem Renaissance was allowing blacks to get a feel of racial pride. Before the 1920's, the blacks were congregated in the south were they were stuck farming or performing some entry level job. They were segregated against in the city and were only allowed to do certain things. The white people had made it difficult to live there and groups like the KKK kept the blacks from speaking out in hopes of equality. When the black people saw the music, art, and literature that was developed in Harlem, they realized how special they really are. They saw that even the northern whites really enjoyed what they had to offer and realized that they no longer wanted to be white, but had their own set of skills that made them have pride in the heritage and race. This pride was seen as they were more bold to demand equality, and participate in movements for rights.

Due to the a number of talented of blacks in Harlem, a new culture emerged. A culture that is mixed with black and white customs and traditions. The change is significant and much different from the fighting races from years ago. Both the white and the black people have benefited from the change because both would attend and enjoy both jazz concerts and pieces of art.
